A New (Old) Passion
A Trip Thru Your Grooves - Episode 1
Before I get started, it is important to know that I am not collecting vinyl as a means of unearthing rare gems at discounted prices that I can flip for profit. It's just that in a world that has become so digitally compressed I long for the days of listening to my music at a speed of 33 1/3 RPM through real speakers instead of as MP3s through my AirPods.
The act of collecting records is an extremely personal one, and though there are some records that belong in every collection, regardless of anyone's stated preferences as an audiophile, I'd be more interested in finding a beat up version of 'Nighthawks at the Diner' by Tom Waits than a near mint version of 'Illmatic' by NAS. Why? I am going to be listening to my purchases and I just prefer Waits. And though some classics never get old, newer spins exist that are perfect for lounging in headphones while staring at the ceiling, thinking about how funny (wonderful, scary, :::insert mood here:::) life can truly be.
I'll put out a post with each new record I procure as my collection grows.
This is a passion project for me. In 2005 my house burned down and I lost over 7,500 vinyl LPs in the destruction. With some extra time on my hands, I thought I'd start to rebuild that collection thanks to the growing number of independent LP resale stores. In fact there are three in my neighborhood alone.
I'll have a donation button coming if you want to contribute, and if you are looking to off your vinyl I'd certainly be interested in seeing what you have available. More importantly, I hope you'll read along.
Be advised, my tastes run toward classic rock, and they should. I grew up during the boom of FM radio and album side weekends on my favorite AOR outlets in Chicago. And though I love music of almost every genre, my heart beats still for most anything by Crosby Stills & Nash, Pink Floyd, Paul Simon, and, as I mentioned, Tom Waits. I'm listening to the debut album by Rickie Lee Jones as I pen this. There is nothing warmer on an unseasonably chilly fall evening than Rickie Lee.
Thanks for joining me on this ride, and stay tuned as I pimp out this blog and my LP collection. Peace and music.
Mike
